KwaZulu-Natal
  • Big Five

Best time to visit

May to September for dry-season game viewing; Phinda is a rewarding safari destination throughout the year.

Set between uMkhuze Game Reserve and iSimangaliso Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Phinda Private Game Reserve protects almost 30,000 hectares of restored wilderness. Its seven habitats range from rare sand forest and woodland to grassland, wetland and mountain country, creating exceptional wildlife diversity within one reserve.

Phinda is home to the Big Five and more than 436 bird species. It is particularly well known for cheetah and black rhino, while twice-daily drives with expert guides and trackers reveal lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and a wealth of smaller wildlife.

Six lodges offer different settings across the reserve, and optional experiences can include guided walks, conservation activities and excursions towards the nearby Maputaland coast. Access and activities should be arranged with the lodge or operator before travel.
