May to September for comfortable dry-season game viewing; summer is especially rewarding for birdlife.
Mkhuze Game Reserve, officially uMkhuze, forms the inland section of iSimangaliso Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Its landscape shifts from Lebombo foothills and acacia savannah to fever-tree woodland, wetlands and the remarkable Sycamore Fig Forest along the uMkhuze River.
The reserve is home to the Big Five, as well as cheetah and African wild dog. Permanent and seasonal pans draw wildlife to well-positioned hides such as kuMasinga, giving visitors excellent opportunities to watch elephant, nyala, impala, giraffe and birds at close range.
More than 420 bird species have been recorded, making Mkhuze a major destination for birders. Self-drive routes, guided walks and game drives are available, but visitors should confirm current gate times, road conditions and activity bookings with iSimangaliso before travelling.
